Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly reached an agreement to extend midfielder Edson Castillo’s contract for an additional year, with the possibility of a further one-year extension.
The 30-year-old Venezuelan made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Chiefs in 2023, quickly becoming a key player with his dynamic performances in midfield. Castillo’s vision, technical skill, and leadership were instrumental in bolstering the team’s engine room.
However, his 2023/24 campaign has been disrupted by an injury sustained during a match against SuperSport United in October last year. Since then, Castillo has featured infrequently, with his time on the pitch limited due to recovery.
With his contract set to expire at the end of this season, Chiefs have opted to keep the experienced midfielder on board, offering him an extension to continue at the club.
“Edson (Castillo) is going to stay for another season; he has renewed his contract, and there’s also an option for another year,” a source revealed to the South African.
“He will return to the team soon, he’s back in training. It’s possible that before the end of the month, we’ll see him feature and get some minutes.
“He’s working on building his match fitness again, but yes, he’s going nowhere, it’s confirmed for at least another season.”
Castillo’s contract extension and his return from injury should be a significant boost for coach Nasreddine Nabi, who will now have more options in midfield as he aims to lead AmaKhosi back to their glory days.
