Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their MTN8 semifinal first-leg clash against Stellenbosch, with Aubrey Modiba set to play a key role in midfield again.
The versatile 29-year-old player, who has proven himself comfortable in any position within the team, was recently deployed in the No 8 midfield role alongside Marcello Allende during Sundowns’ quarterfinal victory against Polokwane City.
Under the guidance of coach Manqoba Mngqithi, Masandawana have been adopting a new style of play, and Modiba has been instrumental in helping the team adjust to these changes.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming match, Modiba expressed his confidence in delivering another strong performance if called upon to play in the midfield once more.
“I’m familiar with the role, the games that we played in the African Football League (AFL), I played that role as an eight,” he said.
“It is not a position that is foreign to me; as an inverted full-back, I used to overload in the midfield.
“I think I’ve done well, and the coach thinks I can help the team in that role, and I am prepared and learning every day about the role.
“Hopefully, I can be better and help the team as much as I can. I’m enjoying the role.”
Sundowns’ semifinal first leg against Stellenbosch is set to kick off at 7pm at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
