Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Reveals Reason Behind Oswin Appollis’ Limited Game Time

Appollis was a regular starter for Bucs last term as they scooped a historic treble but has been introduced largely off the bench this season.

He missed both legs of Pirates’ CAF Champions League tie against African Stars after sustaining an injury in their recent league encounter with TS Galaxy.

The Bafana Bafana international was an unused substitute for the 3-0 Carling Knockout last 16 win over Milford FC Tuesday and was a second-half substitute in the 2-1 Soweto derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

Pitates are next in action in the quarterfinals of the League Cup against Siwelele on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Ouaddou explained that Appollis has been playing non-stop since last season and needs a rest.

“Appollis is a class player-one of the best in South Africa. He is full of quality, but we must remember that he is human, not a robot,” Ouaddou said in the Citizen.

“He had a fantastic debut season with Pirates after joining from Polokwane City. He handled the transition well, and immediately following that, he gave everything for his country at the World Cup.

“He is a player who never cuts corners, which is why he is experiencing fatigue. We are protecting our diamond because we know that by doing so, we will reap the rewards.”

Pirates have already beaten Sekhukhune three times this season. “It’s an important fixture,” Ouaddou added.

“Playing in front of our fans-our 12th man-gives us strength. We began preparing for this match immediately after the derby. I have warned my players that this will be one of our toughest games under the current coach, Papi Zothwane.”
