Mamelodi Sundowns continue their unstoppable march in the DStv Premiership, with coach Rulani Mokwena maintaining a calm demeanour amid talk of invincibility.
Their latest triumph, a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Royal AM, extends their unbeaten streak to an impressive 26 games, setting them on course for a historic season.
In the aftermath of the match, Mokwena addressed the looming question of whether his side will finish the season without a defeat. “We’ve discussed it, but it’s not our primary focus,” he stated in a composed manner during the post-match press conference.
Acknowledging the speculation surrounding their invincibility, Mokwena revealed, “I did ask the question to say, when will we start talking about it? I have not received an answer.” Despite the intrigue, he emphasized that such discussions weren’t dominating the team’s mindset.
Mokwena offered insights into his approach to maintaining his players’ motivation despite already securing the league title. “I want more from them,” he asserted. “More passes, better training, meticulous analysis of matches – I want them to demand excellence from themselves and each other.”
The coach also expressed his satisfaction with Peter Shalulile’s goal on Saturday, ending a dry spell for the striker. “Every human being wants to feel loved and appreciated,” Mokwena commented.
“When a player like Peter gives his heart and soul every single day, even if he doesn’t score, he deserves recognition.”
Looking ahead, Sundowns face Royal AM once again on Tuesday in a quick turnaround before encounters against Stellenbosch FC, TS Galaxy, and Cape Town City FC to close out the season.
Each match presents a fresh challenge, but with Mokwena’s guidance and the team’s unwavering determination, the prospect of an unbeaten campaign remains within reach.
