RB Leipzig secure tenth signing of transfer window on eve of closure

RB Leipzig have completed their tenth summer signing two days before the transfer window closes.

Christopher Lenz has joined the Red Bull outfit from Eintracht Frankfurt. He has signed a one-year deal with the option of a further year, and will wear the number 3 shirt at RBL.

The 28-year-old generally plays as a left-back, but can also be used as a left midfielder or as a centre-back.

“I’m really pleased to be at RB Leipzig, one of the best clubs in the Bundesliga. The important thing now is that I settle in quickly here. I want to get going right away. We’ve got lots to aim for this season and I want to play my part in the team reaching our goals.”

The born-and-bred Berliner learnt the ropes in the youth teams of Tennis Borussia Berlin and Hertha BSC among others, before he transferred to the academy of Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012. After 109 Regionalliga West appearances for Borussia’s second team, as well as a total of twelve matches for Germany’s U18s and U19s, Christopher Lenz returned to the capital in summer 2016 and joined 1. FC Union Berlin. After half a year at Union, he spent one and a half years on loan at Holstein Kiel.

During the 2018/19 season, the left footer remained at 1. FC Union and gradually established himself as a first-team regular. He was promoted to the Bundesliga with Union at the end of the season and made his top-flight debut on 18th August 2019. The opponents? RB Leipzig, who won 4-0 in Berlin.

In summer 2021, Christopher Lenz signed for Eintracht Frankfurt and achieved his biggest success so far with the Hesse outfit, when he won the UEFA Europa League in May 2022. He came on as a substitute in extra time against Rangers (RB Leipzig’s semi-final opponents) and converted Eintracht’s first attempt in the penalty shoot-out.
