Brandon Petersen says he was all set to join Orlando Pirates before opting to link up with Gavin Hunt at Kaizer Chiefs.
The 27-year-old was in need of a club following the sale of Bidvest Wits in 2020.
He signed for Amakhosi on a free transfer at the start of the 2021/22 season.
He made his club debut in the Carling Black Label win over Orlando Pirates and has played one DStv Premiership game this season, in the 4-1 loss to Royal AM in September.
Petersen told Chiefs’ YouTube channel: “I was at Bidvest Wits and there was obviously rumours going about that the team was going to be sold.
“That’s when my agent started looking around for teams.
“I was set on going to Orlando Pirates because I had a guy [from the club] come to my house and we spoke about contracts and everything.
“Then coach Gavin [Hunt] called me and said that he wanted me at Chiefs but at the time, they had the [transfer] ban so we were waiting for the verdict, which was that they couldn’t sign any players.”
Hunt has since left Amakhosi but Petersen says he was happy to stay and work with returning head coach Stuart Baxter.
“The season passed and halfway through coach Gavin left and coach Stuart came in. I had worked with coach Lee [Baxter] and he was impressed and was keen on keeping me there.
“So, when coach Stuart came in, that was it. They decided to keep me.”
