The 22-year-old joins from Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union and becomes Rangers’ eighth signing of the transfer window as new head coach Derek McInnes continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Although Rangers did not disclose the transfer fee, reports this week suggested the deal was worth around 4.5 million dollars.
Makhanya admitted the move is the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now. It is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
“For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
The centre-back will wear the number 24 shirt at Ibrox and becomes the fifth South African to represent Rangers.
McInnes believes the young defender has all the qualities needed to succeed in Scotland.
“We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club,” McInnes said.
“He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.

“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”
Makhanya began his professional career at Stellenbosch after progressing through the club’s academy. He enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season and won the 2022/23 Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award before earning a move to Philadelphia Union in July 2023.
After initially featuring for Philadelphia Union II, he established himself in the senior side, making more than 50 first-team appearances during his time in Major League Soccer.
Makhanya has one senior international appearance for Bafana Bafana and that was against Nicaragua in May 2026.
