The recently retired midfielder, who has since joined Tunisian club US Monastir as a coach, praised former Orlando Pirates mentor Jose Riveiro for placing his faith in Mofokeng at a crucial stage of the youngster’s career.
Makudubela argued that many gifted players fail to reach their potential because they are coached by people who try to change their natural game instead of embracing it.
Using Mofokeng as an example, he said Riveiro deserves credit for recognising the 20-year-old’s qualities and giving him the platform to flourish.
“I’ll make an example. Had coach Jose Riveiro not given Relebohile Mofokeng a chance, South Africa could have just said, ‘Hey, this boy’s got potential. Until when?'” Makudubela told Soccer Laduma.
The former midfielder added that players with extraordinary ability require coaches who are willing to trust their instincts and allow them to express themselves on the pitch.
“You look at Rele again, the type of player he is. He needs a special coach. I always say special players deserve special coaches.”

Makudubela went on to compare Mofokeng’s profile with world-class attacking talents such as Vinicius Junior and Neymar, while also highlighting Orlando Pirates youngster Mpho Padime as another player with similar qualities.
Reflecting on his own journey, the 37-year-old explained that his decision to represent 17 clubs during his career was largely influenced by the search for coaches whose playing philosophy suited his strengths.
“I saw that if I didn’t fit a coach’s system, it was better to move on and find one who appreciated the type of football I played,” he said.
Makudubela believes those decisions ultimately paid off, helping him win silverware and maximise a career that spanned several countries.
