Orlando Pirates emerged from a fiercely contested Soweto derby with a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, Tshepang Moremi delivering the decisive moment to secure bragging rights for the Buccaneers.
Moremi struck 10 minutes into the second half to restore Pirates’ advantage after an entertaining opening period had ended with the teams level. The winger’s fifth Premiership goal of the season proved enough to settle a contest in which Chiefs had started with greater urgency but ultimately paid for missed opportunities.
Wandile Duba and Pule Mmodi both wasted excellent chances during the opening 15 minutes as Chiefs threatened to take control. Instead, Pirates broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Yanela Mbuthuma used his strength to force his way into the penalty area before firing a shot that deflected beyond Brandon Petersen.
Chiefs responded six minutes later, with Mmodi capitalising on a rare mistake from Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine. The Bafana Bafana international failed to gather a low cross, allowing the forward to collect the loose ball and score into an unguarded net.
The sides went into the interval at 1-1, but Pirates returned with greater attacking purpose and found their breakthrough in the 55th minute.

Thapelo Mokobodi was the architect, driving forward from midfield and exploiting the space behind Chiefs’ advanced defensive line. His pass found Moremi, who finished confidently to put Pirates back in front.
The goal continued an impressive spell for the winger, who had scored twice in Pirates’ 3-0 Carling Knockout victory over Milford FC earlier in the week.
Chiefs pushed for another equaliser during the closing stages, but Pirates held firm to claim a significant derby victory. For Moremi, it was another influential contribution in a season of growing importance, while the Buccaneers left with three points and the satisfaction of defeating their fiercest rivals.
