Ernst Middendorp says Maritzburg United built on the disappointment of their Nedbank Cup exit to record a hard-fought 2-1 win over SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership.
The Team of Choice were eliminated from the lucrative cup competition by a last minute Iqraam Rayners goal at home to Matsatsantsa.
But this time around, goals from Friday Samu (45+3′) and Rowan Human (71′) cancelled out Jesse Donn’s 55th minute strike to claim the all-important three points against Kaitano Tembo’s side, and end their 11-game winless run.
Speaking after the match, Middendorp told SuperSport: “We were happy with the second half of the cup game some days ago and I think we were able to continue on from that in this game.
“We had a sluggish period where we conceded the goal, where we were not 100 percent in the aggression and this total willingness to make the result, but in total it was definitely a fully deserved win from the team.”
Maritzburg ended the evening in 12th-place on the DStv Premiership standings with 18 points from 19 games.
They next face Golden Arrows at home on 25 February, with Middendorp adding: “It is all about looking for a proper recovery to keep the momentum going. We have some yellow card suspensions for the next game [Keegan Ritchie and Travis Graham], but other players will contribute and jump in.”
