Ernst Middendorp says he was not upset to have been sacked by Maritzburg United only that it could have been done sooner.
The German mentor was dismissed by the Team of Choice, for the fourth time, after securing the club’s DStv Premiership safety, in 12th place with 21 points.
Maritzburg Chairman Farouk Kadodia explained that he was tired of seeing his side in continued relegation battle season after season and decided to go in a new direction.
Middendorp was brought back to Maritzburg at the start of the 2020/21 campaign and he secured a 13th-place finish.
A number of players have since been released by Maritzburg as they prepare for the 2022/23 season.
Middendorp told Marawa Sports Show: “There was no final meeting, I received a phone call on Tuesday around lunchtime. At that time I was not in Pietermaritzburg. I was asked to come in for a meeting. I said: ‘what is it about?’ and I was told that the partnership between Ernst Middendorp and Maritzburg United is coming to an end, that is a final decision.
“I have enjoyed my time in Pietermaritzburg with Maritzburg United several times. That is what is in my mind. The only thing I am a bit unhappy about restricting my own future was the late discussions only on the 7th of June. I think we could it have done four or three weeks earlier.”
