Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has outlined a new, more attacking style for the club as he takes the reins for the 2024/25 season.
Known for his preference for fast-paced football, Mngqithi explained that while ball possession is important, creating numerous scoring opportunities is the key to victory.
He emphasized the difference between possession football and attacking football, stating that his focus is on attacking the opposition’s defensive lines rather than dominating possession.
Speaking at the MTN8 launch, Mngqithi revealed his football philosophy saying,
“And there’s a very clear difference in possession football and attacking football and personally I’m a coach who prefers to attack the lines than to enjoy longer spells of possession.”
Replacing Rulani Mokwena, Mngqithi oversaw a pre-season training camp in Austria where the team faced stiff competition from European and Middle Eastern clubs. While early results were mixed, the matches against Al Arabi and Al Hilal showcased a marked improvement in Sundowns’ attacking play.
Sundowns kick off their season with an MTN8 clash against Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon.
