Laporta wants De Jong to take a pay cut

Barcelona President Joan Laporta wants midfielder Frenkie de Jong to take a pay cut to stay at the club.

With Barcelona making a number of signings during the summer transfer window there is little sign of any high profile players leaving.
At one stage De Jong was strongly linked with a move away to a number of clubs including Manchester United but the player has now stated that he wants to stay at Camp Nou.
Due to their massive wage bill if Barcelona cannot get De Jong to lessen his salary the club may not be able to register players.
In a interview in New York, where Barcelona have been involved in training and pre-season friendlies, Laporta appealed to De Jong to reduce his salary in order to help the club.

“We are going to do everything possible so that he can stay and we hope that the player also does everything possible in order to stay. We all have to make an effort,” said Laporta.
We found a payroll that had shot up more than 40%. What is clear is that we have a new salary structure and all players have to fit into it.”
“The important thing is that he wants to stay and we want him to stay.”
The fact is De Jong was already a Barcelona player before all the new signings and it’s now seen as unfair by many to demand the Dutchman takes a pay cut when maybe the club should have not signed all the new players they did.
