Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has hinted at the potential return of 26-year-old forward, Ashley du Preez, before the year’s end.
Du Preez, who started the season in stellar form with three goals and two assists in his first 11 games, has been sidelined for the past two months due to injury.
While fans caught a glimpse of Du Preez with the first team in Polokwane recently, Johnson clarified that the player’s presence was tied to fulfilling social responsibilities for the club rather than indicating immediate readiness for the pitch.
Johnson expressed his hope for du Preez’s return, stating, “I pray [Ashley returns] before the end of the year, he’s almost there. It’s not that we brought him with to show he’s ready; he’s about two weeks off.”
Discussing recent 1-0 victories over Moroka Swallows and Polokwane City, Johnson acknowledged the team’s progress but emphasized they are yet to reach their desired level. Reflecting on the challenges posed by different playing styles, particularly against Polokwane, he stated, “We have to go back home and say, how do we play against a team who plays like this.”
While pleased with the team’s overall performance, Johnson emphasized the need to adapt to diverse strategies, citing the upcoming clash against Richards Bay FC on December 23 as another opportunity for growth. He remarked, “We need to learn how to play against that and also make sure we’re able to keep on stitching the Kaizer Chiefs cloth. I think we’re doing a good job.”
With an eye on continuous improvement, Johnson downplayed any premature celebration, saying, “When it’s 15 wins [on the trot], then we talk [about doing well].” As Kaizer Chiefs prepare for their upcoming DStv Premiership clash against Richards Bay FC, fans eagerly anticipate the return of Du Preez, hopeful that his dynamic contributions will further enhance the team’s success.
