Jordaan: As a country we have to introduce VAR

South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan says that ‘as a country we have to introduce VAR’.

Jordaan has been having discussions with Premier Soccer League (PSL) president Irvin Khoza about plans to implement the new technology and there are still a few stumbling blocks before it becomes a reality.

South Africa has fallen behind many other countries in incorporating VAR and some local referees who referee international tournaments, say it is difficult to get used to the system.

Jordaan says it is absolute must that VAR be introduced and spoke of some of the challenges the football bosses are facing, including the reason for the delay.

“We have to introduce VAR, we have to as a country,” Jordaan said.

“There are a number of issues and one is the commercialisation of SA football, the second is digitalisation, harmonisation and integration of technology in preparation of our national teams.

“Those are some of the major issues that we have discussed [with PSL chair Irvin Khoza] and we will continue discussing them.”
