GRANT KEKANA ‘HONOURED’ TO WIN DEFENDER OF THE SEASON AWARD

Kekana’s contributions to Sundowns’ defensive line were instrumental in the team conceding a mere 11 goals over the course of 30 league matches, securing their seventh consecutive league title.

Grant Kekana has praised Tapelo Xoki of Orlando Pirates and Deano van Rooyen of Stellenbosch, after beating them to the Defender of the Season award.

Reflecting on his accolade, Kekana credited the collective effort of the team for their almost invincible league run, marred only by a 1-0 loss to Cape Town City on the final day.

“It’s a privilege and honour to win the DStv Premiership Defender of the Season award,” said Kekana.

“I was nominated with two great players who had great seasons for their clubs. I am just honoured to be the one who won the award.

“I’d like to thank the club. Firstly, the coach (Rulani Mokwena), the entire technical team and my teammates. I think this award comes down to what the collective has done.”

In addition to his club success, Kekana had a standout year with the national team, Bafana Bafana, helping them secure a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

His impressive season was further highlighted by his three goals in 17 league appearances for Sundowns.

Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Kekana and his defensive partner, Mothobi Mvala, were the most consistent centre-backs at the club, featuring in more league matches than any other defenders.
