The reigning CAF Champions League winners confirmed Mokwena’s appointment on their social media platforms, welcoming the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor to the club.
“Welcome to your new home,” the club posted on X.
Mokwena arrives in Egypt after a brief spell with Libyan side Al Ittihad SC, whom he joined in March this year. His time in Libya proved challenging, with the club missing out on qualification for both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup for next season.
The move to Pyramids presents Mokwena with an opportunity to return to the continent’s biggest stage, taking charge of one of Africa’s most ambitious clubs.
With Pyramids having won the 2024/25 CAF Champions League before clinching the CAF Super Cup and the FIFA African-Asian Cup last year, the club will expect the South African tactician to build on that success and challenge for more domestic and continental honours.

Reports indicate that Mokwena has assembled a familiar backroom team, calling on fellow South Africans Wendell Robinson to serve as goalkeeper coach and Sinethemba Badela as assistant coach.
The trio will be tasked with helping Pyramids maintain their status among Africa’s elite while competing for the Egyptian Premier League title and defending their continental crown.
