Former Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns striker Leonardo Castro announces retirement

Greenville Triumph have confirmed that Castro will retire from professional football at the end of this season.

The 37-year-old’s contract with Greenville, who compete in the third tier of American football, will expire on 30 November, after which he will officially hang up his boots.

On 17 October, ahead of their match against Charlotte Independence, Castro and a teammate were honoured as they prepared to make their final home appearance at GE Vernova Park.

Greenville Triumph wrote on their official website after the match: “Before kick-off, the club honoured Brandon Fricke and Leo Castro, who will retire at the end of the season, recognising their contributions to the Triumph.”

Castro joined the club in March 2023, more than six months after leaving Naturena as a free agent.

According to Transfermarkt, the Colombian has registered 30 goals and 11 assists in 104 appearances for Greenville Triumph.

It is worth noting that, in October 2024, Brazilian legend and former 2005 Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho joined Greenville Triumph’s ownership group.
