DStv Premiership: AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates play to goalless draw

AmaZulu were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Orlando Pirates in their DStv Premiership clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night.

Despite an eager midweek crowd of over 11,000 fans, the match yielded no goals.

Both teams promised much with their fast-paced play, but scoring opportunities were scarce.

AmaZulu came into the game on a high, having recently eliminated Pirates’ rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16. Meanwhile, Pirates had bypassed Cape Town Spurs.

Pirates, who previously won the MTN8 title at this venue earlier in the month, maintained their unbeaten record since coach Jose Riveiro took charge.

The game was notable as the first encounter between two Spanish coaches in the PSL, AmaZulu’s Pablo Franco Martin and Jose Riveiro.

Pirates dominated the match but failed to convert their advantage into goals. AmaZulu’s Martin faced a nightmare with injuries, making two defensive substitutions.

The best chance of the game fell to Pirates in the 76th minute, but Evidence Makgopa headed wide when unmarked. Junior Dion of AmaZulu had a quiet game up top, ultimately being replaced without a clear sight of goal.

AmaZulu last defeated Pirates in Durban in 2009. The draw keeps Pirates in 13th place in the DStv Premiership with eight points from six matches, while AmaZulu occupies 10th place, having played nine matches.
