CAF Confederation Cup: Stellies defeated on CAF CC debut

Stellenbosch‘s debut in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage ended in a 2-0 defeat against Mali’s Stade Malien Bamako.

The South African club was without suspended central defender Ismail Toure, who was sent off in their previous match against AS Vita. His absence was evident as Bamako capitalised on defensive gaps.

Despite facing unfamiliar South African opposition, Bamako took an early lead. In the 15th minute, Haman Mandjan’s deflected shot beat goalkeeper Sage Stephens, putting the visitors ahead.

Stellenbosch, managed by Steve Barker, struggled to gain momentum and were dominated by Bamako, who controlled possession and limited attacking opportunities.

In an attempt to turn the tide, Stellenbosch made three substitutions at halftime, introducing Ashley Cupido, Andre de Jong, and Langelihle Phili for Genino Palace, Ibrahim Jabaar, and Kyle Jurgens.

The changes injected energy, and Stellenbosch enjoyed more possession, but Bamako’s resolute defence thwarted their efforts.

Omega Mdaka’s long-range free-kick tested Bamako’s goalkeeper but failed to find the net.

In stoppage time, a foul by Devin Titus on Diaby resulted in a penalty, which Daouda Coulibaly converted, securing a 2-0 victory for the Malian side.

Stellenbosch will aim to recover from this setback as they return to domestic action on Sunday, facing Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium.
