Dove was set to feature in Mozambique’s opening match against South Africa tonight, but he was denied permission to participate by his club. The Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) expressed their disappointment over the late notice and the lack of timely communication from Kaizer Chiefs.
According to the FMF, they sent a request to the club on June 19th seeking Dove’s release, but Kaizer Chiefs did not respond until yesterday, June 25th, at 3:50 PM. This delay left the FMF with no time to find a replacement and forced them to withdraw Dove from the squad.
Dove’s Absence a Blow to Mozambique
Dove’s absence is a significant blow to Mozambique’s hopes of making a deep run in the COSAFA Cup. The experienced defender is a key player for the national team and his leadership and defensive prowess will be sorely missed.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by national teams in balancing the demands of club football and international tournaments. With the COSAFA Cup not falling within the FIFA international calendar, clubs are not obligated to release their players, leading to potential conflicts and player unavailability.
Mozambique Secure Point With South Africa in the COSAFA Cup Despite Dove’s Absence
Mozambique had to adjust their tactics and relied on other players to step up in Dove’s absence. Their opening match against South Africa ended in a draw, with Victor Matine’s men up against Eswatini next.
Kickoff for that one is at 12h00 on Saturday, 29 June 2024.
