RHULANI MOKWENA LATEST NEWS

Rhulani Mokwena (born 9 January 1987) is a South African football manager who is currently the manager of Wydad AC (in Morocco).

His father, Julius Sono Hloae, played for Orlando Pirates, and his uncle, Jomo Sono, is a legendary figure in South African football.

Mokwena’s coaching journey began in the youth ranks of Silver Stars (later Platinum Stars), before he ascended to assistant manager roles at Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates. In 2019, he stepped into the breach as interim manager at Pirates, overseeing a mixed bag of results in his five-month tenure.

The following year, Mokwena took the reins at Chippa United, but his tenure was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. He managed just one match for the club before his contract expired.

Mokwena was appointed co-coach of Mamelodi Sundowns along with Manqoba Mngqithi in the 2020/21 season following the departure of Pitso Mosimane to Al Ahly that campaign.

They won the league, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in their first two seasons, but a challenging start to the 2022/23 season led to Mokwena being given sole charge, while Mngqithi was relegated to the role of assistant.

Under Mokwena’s guidance, Sundowns continued to dominate South African football, winning a total of seven trophies during his four-year tenure (either in joint or sole charge; namely four league titles, MTN8, Nedbank Cup and AFL).

On the 3rd of July 2024 it was confirmed that Mokwena and Mamelodi Sundowns have parted ways, citing taking into account the objectives and expectations of the board.

Later that month, he joined Botola side Wydad AC as head coach.
