Former Orlando Pirates striker Sibusiso Zuma believes Benni McCarthy would be an ideal candidate to become coach of Bucs.
This past season, McCarthy was hired in December to take charge of the AmaZulu coaching reigns and proceeded to take the side from 12 position on the table to finish as runners-up in the DStv Premiership. Plus a place in the CAF Champions League.
And all this done with a squad not expected to challenge the big sides in the league with far greater resources.
In an interview with KickOff.com, Zuma reckons Pirates should take a look at their former player McCarthy, who knows how the club works having being a treble winner during his playing days.
“I’m not saying Fadlu [Davids] and Mandla Ncikazi are not good coaches, I’ve seen when they’ve coached teams, the kind of football they’ve played; quality,” Zuma told KickOff.com.
“Possession, they all about possession, defending well. I strongly believe Pirates need Benni as well. I’m thinking Mr Khoza needs to make a plan, get Benni there, Sundowns have three coaches, put Benni in with his experience.”
Zuma feels the reason why Benni would be ideal for the Bucs coaching hot-seat is due to his experience of playing at the highest levels in world football overseas and at home plus he would be best suited to handle the pressure which goes with the job at the Soweto Giants.
“He’s going to help big time. I’m not saying these two aren’t going to do a good job but I think the experience of McCarthy will help Orlando Pirates,” Zuma explained.
“Pirates have players on paper, they have a team on paper but Benni will get into the players’ minds, I think that’s the only thing that’s missing.”
