Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux is on the verge of a significant transfer to Swedish powerhouse Hammarby IF, just six months after joining IFK Varnamo.
The 24-year-old made 16 appearances for Varnamo following a return to Sweden after an injury-plagued period with Dutch club Volendam. His strong performances in the Allsvenskan earned him a recall to Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, where he played in victories against Uganda and Congo.
The former SuperSport United midfielder is now set to join Hammarby, one of Sweden’s most prominent clubs. Hammarby’s second-place finish in the previous Allsvenskan season secured them a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
“Yes, I can confirm that Hammarby have made an approach to Varnamo about Luke Le Roux,” his agent, Matthew Moore of Centre Circle, told iDiski Times.
“This move would allow Luke to play at the highest possible level leading up to the 2026 World Cup, which he hopes to be a part of.
“The player has been an outstanding professional during his time at Varnamo. The club got him on a really good deal in the summer and will make a good profit.
“They have more than enough time to find a replacement, so we fully expect them to not stand in the way.”
