Tashreeq Matthews is a South African soccer player who plays as an attacker for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier Soccer League. He was born and raised in Cape Town and is the second oldest of four siblings.
Matthews began playing soccer at the tender age of four and signed with Ajax Cape Town academy at the age of eleven. He progressed to the senior team, earning him a contract with Borussia Dortmund’s U19 team.
However, reported registration issues cut his time in Germany short, prompting a loan spell to Jong Utrecht in the Netherlands for the remainder of the 2018/19 season. Upon his return to Germany, Matthews would be loaned out to Helsingborgs IF in Sweden for the subsequent season.
Matthews’ true breakthrough came with Varberg BoIS in the Swedish Allsvenkan. Playing alongside fellow South Africans Luke Le Roux and Keanan Ayer, Matthews showcased his exceptional skills and made a name for himself. His impressive performances caught the attention of Sirius, another Swedish club.
In 2023, Matthews played a crucial role in Sirius’s battle against relegation. His 10 goals and 9 assists were instrumental in the team’s late-season resurgence. His outstanding form earned him a well-deserved move back to his native South Africa to join Mamelodi Sundowns.
