Shane McGregor: Covid-19 rules benefits teams with big squads

Shane McGregor

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United coach Shane McGregor says the five substitution rule in place designed to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic benefit’s teams with big squads.

McGregor said the five substitution rule gives the advantage to teams with lots of depth as is the case with Sundowns.

After beating SuperSport 1-0 over the weekend in the Tshwane Derby, Sundowns now sit 12 points clear at the summit of the DStv Premiership table ahead of second-placed Kaizer Chiefs.

“Yes, Sundowns will win the league it’s as simple as that as they are far too good for everyone,” McGregor told KickOff.com.

“It’s not normal, and the problem is that Sundowns have been far too consistent with other teams faltering, and that’s the biggest problem. It’s not good for soccer and it’s not good for the game.

“Chiefs are still coming around, but they got hit by a Covid-19 outbreak.

“Sundowns are far too strong at the moment, and they are getting the job done, unlike other teams that are faltering.

“Luckily for them, Covid has got a lot to do with it, and a lot of teams have had problems with Covid, while with their big squad they seem to be lucky enough to get away with it.

“I can’t see Sundowns not winning the league, and they’ll win it easily,” he added.
