The South African Football Association (SAFA) have suspended all football in the country until April 4 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
SAFA president Danny Jordaan made the announcement at the organisation’s headquarters in Nasrec, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
This, despite Sports, Arts and Culture minister giving the go-ahead for the PSL and GladAfrica Championship to resume next week with matches to be played behind closed doors and strict safety measures in place as well as the PSL and Dr Irvin Khoza in particular voicing their approval of the government’s directive.
However, SAFA disagree wholewheartedly as Jordaan cited the examples of other countries where playing behind closed doors did not work and actually made the virus spread further.
Jordaan was supposed to have a meeting with Khoza on Wednesday morning but Khoza cancelled.
“We have a responsibility to govern football and therefore protect the players,” said Safa president Danny Jordaan making the announcement.
“It’s not possible to play. Safa decided there would be no matches – that’s it.”
