SAFA confirmed the appointment on Sunday following an Ordinary Meeting of the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The meeting saw members elect new vice presidents and appoint several committees, including those responsible for technical development, finance, schools and competitions.
SAFA president Danny Jordaan announced the appointments, with Khumalo set to serve under Jack Maluleke, who retains his position as chairman of the Technical Committee.
The 59-year-old is a celebrated figure in South African football, having represented Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs during his playing career. He was part of the national team that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil in 1996.

Khumalo has also gained experience on the coaching and administrative side of the game, having worked as an assistant coach at Chiefs before serving as technical director and caretaker coach at Baroka FC.
His new position will involve contributing to the committee’s work in improving football development and coaching standards across the country.
According to SAFA’s statutes, the Technical Committee analyses training methods, promotes technical development and works towards improving coaches’ qualifications.
The committee is also responsible for organising courses and conferences for coaches, instructors, trainers and administrators, as well as compiling educational material for players, coaches and referees.
Its duties further include recommending coaches for national teams, submitting proposals on football development and advising the NEC on reports from national-team coaches.
The committee also oversees matters concerning football pitches and the medical aspects of the game.
