Rulani Mokwena has slammed suggestions that anybody could coach Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Brazilians have five wins from their opening five games of the new DStv Premiership season, alongside victory in their MTN8 quarter-final clash.
Mokwena took sole charge of the team last season and led the club to a six successive league title.
He had previously worked alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela after Pitso Mosimane left Sundowns.
While most critics acknowledge that the team has improved under Mokwena, there are still those who feel that Mokwena is only benefitting from those that came before him.
Mokwena responded to his critics in the Citizen, saying: “You know the saying right?
“It’s a saying that is doing the rounds that anyone can coach Sundowns, so any coach can bring that goal, so I don’t want to talk about it.”
Sundowns last defeated Richards Bay 1-0 with Junior Mendieta on target.
“It’s the quality of the players – and we’ve got good players – but it’s a beautiful goal and we have scored so many goals this season, in fact even last season we scored some amazing goals,” added Mokwena.
“Nothing has changed, its just that the players know each other better and there’s continuity and a lot of hard work from the technical team and we have a good squad and that makes a huge difference.”
Sundowns are next in action against Polokwane City on Wednesday.
