Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was left searching for answers after his team’s 1-0 loss to Cape Town City in Wednesday’s Betway Premiership match. Darwin Gonzalez scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute at Cape Town Stadium.
Pirates had a chance to take the lead just minutes earlier, however, Patrick Maswanganyi missed from the penalty spot after being fouled inside the area.
It was a second win in two games for new City head coach Muhsin Ertugral and a second successive goal for Ganzalez, following their 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs last weekend.
For Pirates it was just a second loss of the campaign, with the result leaving the team in second place on the league standings with 27 points from 11 games – three adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Cape Town City moved up to sixth with 17 points from 12 games.
Speaking after the match, a dumbfounded Riveiro told SuperSport: “I cannot do an analysis here right now.
“It’s actually quite difficult to explain the final result, I think the difference between both teams was too big this time.
“With all respect for the game of Cape Town City, it’s difficult to explain that we lost this game the way we did it.
“But this is football, they managed to put one ball in the net; we didn’t but a very complete performance, we did everything to win the match, not much that you can do.
“So, to the next one.”
Pirates are next in action at home to CR Belouizdad in the CAF Champions League on Sunday.
