Mamelodi Sundowns thrash Chiefs, Richards Bay fly high – Pro Philani looks back at what was a massive weekend of football on the South African front!
TS Galaxy conquers Pretoria whilst Sundowns thrash Chiefs
Goals in either half from defenders Given Msimango and Ebrahim Seedat completed a double for TS Galaxy against the Pretoria-based sides. The Rockets went into the match on Sunday evening with their tails up after having beaten Sundowns 1-0 in Pretoria on Wednesday night.
Against SuperSport United, it was Galaxy who showed a high level of confidence and were duly rewarded as Msimango headed in from a corner.
Again, Galaxy’s transition play yielded a more fruitful results in the second half as Seedat tapped into an empty net to give the Rockets all three points as they shoot straight to the top of the log, only second on goal difference to new-comers, Richards Bay.
Rich Boyz shoot straight to the top
A goal by substitute Yonela Mbuthuma gave newcomers Richards Bay a 1-0 home win at home against 10-man Sekhukhune United.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men after striker Tashreeq Morris was given his marching orders in the early minutes of the second half after a second bookable offense.
The match was clouded by serious foul play throughout as referee Thando Ndzandzeka issued six yellow cards on the evening.
The Rich Boyz remain unbeaten and are on top of the log after three rounds of fixtures.
Chippa shock wasteful Pirates
Abdi Banda’s late header handed Daine Klate his first ever DSstv Premiership win against his former side Orlando Pirates and Orlando stadium.
Pirates will rue missed chances on the day as they could not convert any of their several gilt-edged opportunities. This was Chippa’s first away win at Pirates since April 2013 and their first win since 2016 against the Buccaneers.
This win saw Chippa shoot straight to 10th place on four points, equal with Pirates who are in eighth place.
Sundowns thrash Chiefs at packed Loftus
Mamelodi Sundowns recorded their biggest win against rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the packed Loftus stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a disastrous afternoon for Siyabonga Ngezana of Chiefs as his two first-half mistakes gave the Brazilians a 2-0 lead before halftime.
Chiefs had all the possession and missed two glorious chances including a penalty in the early stages of the second half before Sundowns striker, Peter Shalulile, extended Sundowns’ lead to 3-0. New signing Abubeker Nassir came on and gave Sundowns more firepower upfront.
The Ethiopian found himself unmarked on the left to toy with Chiefs’ defense and found himself a goal in the bottom corner to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
AmaKhosi will take this defeat to heart and address the issue of their squad depth as it remains to be seen if striker Ashley Du Preez will be back before their home game in Durban against Richards Bay.
Mamelodi Sundowns used the Chiefs match to announce their fourth signing of the season, Bongani Zungu. Zungu returns to the Brazilians after spending some time in France and Scotland.
