Orlando Pirates gives Riviero his flowers

Orlando Pirates has lauded coach José Riveiro for his exceptional achievements, which have come despite extended periods of separation from his family.

Riveiro has defied expectations, leading Pirates to three straight MTN8 trophies, two consecutive Nedbank Cup titles, and back-to-back second-place finishes in the Betway Premiership.

They are currently separated from log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on goal difference, with both clubs both maintaining a perfect start to the league season.

When the little-known Spaniard joined the club two years ago, he faced skepticism from some quarters. Critics questioned his perceived lack of experience, with some even resorting to derogatory comments. However, Riveiro remained focused on his work and proved his detractors wrong. At the time, he declared,

I have been hired by the Club. We are going to work to make history together and build a team we are all proud of. I don’t spend time thinking about what people say about me. My work must do the talking for me,”

Now into his third full season at the helm, Riveiro’s accomplishments have resonated throughout South African football.

Under his leadership, Pirates have reestablished themselves as a competitive force. Moreover, the Soweto Giants have qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time since 2018/19 under Riveiro’s guidance.

Recognizing his remarkable journey, the Soweto Giants have penned a tribute to Riveiro on their website, acknowledging his transformation from an unknown coach to a successful leader.

“What many don’t know, for two long years, Riveiro has been separated from his wife and young daughter, enduring the isolation of distance while shouldering the weight of leading a football giant like Orlando Pirates,” said Pirates in a statement.

“The mental toll of working away from family, compounded by the unrelenting demands of top-level coaching, would have broken many. Yet Riveiro has persevered, driven by a profound sense of duty to the club and its supporters.

“In the face of adversity, Riveiro has remained the epitome of selflessness. His commitment to this institution and its success has never wavered, even at the expense of his own personal well-being.”

During a FIFA break, Riveiro will finally reunite with his family after a long absence.

“Now, with the FIFA break offering a temporary respite, Riveiro finally has the chance to reconnect with his family – a long-overdue reunion for a man who has given so much of himself for the greater good,” statement added.
