In a significant move to resurrect their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed German tactician Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
The seasoned Bundesliga coach, with a successful track record at clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, and Hertha Berlin, takes over the reins of the Nigerian national team.
Labbadia’s appointment comes after a reported breakdown in negotiations with Herve Renard, who was previously linked to the role. This marks a new chapter for the Super Eagles, who said on their official X account,
“The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.”
The NFF’s decision to appoint Labbadia is particularly significant given the precarious World Cup qualification situation which lies ahead of the 58 ear-old, along with a pair of upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.
With just 12 days to prepare for the crucial matches, Labbadia will face the immediate challenge of guiding the Super Eagles to victory and securing their place in the continental tournament.
The German tactician replaces Finidi George, who had a brief stint as interim coach following the departure of Jose Peseiro.
While Labbadia’s experience in German football is undeniable, his ability to adapt to the unique challenges of African football will be a key factor in his success.
