The Brazilians were forced to postpone their departure for their pre-season camp in Austria after Adams was found dead in an apartment in Cape Town, only weeks after returning from the FIFA World Cup.
“It has been very challenging and difficult for everyone to come to terms with, not only the team but also the entire country. Some of the guys weren’t mentally there at training and the coach understood that,” said Modiba at the launch of the MTN8.
The emotional setback also contributed to Sundowns requesting the postponement of their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants, a request that was approved by the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Despite understanding the decision, Modiba admitted the players had mentally prepared themselves to kick off their league campaign, but now will play their first game of the season against Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinal at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

“Mentally, all of us were prepared to play on the first. One would’ve loved to play because you don’t want to fall behind in the league even early on. We had to accept the situation and focus on the MTN8.”
With the grieving process continuing, Sundowns are now determined to channel their emotions into a strong start to the season. Modiba believes the club’s stability will be a key advantage, with only a few new faces added to the squad during the transfer window.
