Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has revealed that club captain Itumeleng Khune is no longer the number one goalkeeper at the club.
Khune has consistently been one of the Glamour Boys’ top performers over the last decade, but has recently had the number one shirt taken from him by Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi.
Khune returned from almost a year injured on the sidelines, but after making just two appearances this season, suffered a setback in his rehabilitation.
And while Amakhosi fans expect the 32-year-old to walk straight back in to the team when he is recovered, Middendorp has stated otherwise.
“I don’t know, what are you saying? But who has been number-one this season? Let’s not talk about other players,” Middendorp told KickOff.
“We have a number-one goalkeeper, who is performing week-in and week-out, who is the national team goalkeeper for Nigeria, having done a fantastic job in AFCON.
“Guys, we are looking into things, the performances we are getting week in and week out, the record is there as reference. What you are saying is a little bit far out of the frame.”
Akpeyi was the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and has been a stabilising influence for Chiefs between the poles, who have had their fair share of goalkeeping troubles over the last year.
