Mamelodi Sundowns may have opened a six-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, but midfielder Zuko Mdunyelwa insists the Brazilians cannot afford to become complacent ahead of their trip to face Chippa United.
The Brazilians have made a flying start to the new Betway Premiership campaign, collecting maximum points from their league matches so far this season and establishing themselves as early title contenders.
Chippa United, meanwhile, find themselves in 12th place and are still searching for their first victory of the campaign. Brandon Truter’s side have drawn four of their opening five matches, and will be determined to turn their promising performances into three points when they welcome the league leaders to Buffalo City.
Despite their position on the table, Sundowns are expecting a difficult test against a Chippa side that has proven particularly stubborn on home soil.
Mdunyelwa believes the Chilli Boys could look to frustrate Sundowns by sitting deep and relying on quick counter-attacks.

“Their approach would be to try and minimise our attack and try to stay low and would try to hit us on the counter, but we are prepared for whatever they might try and throw at us,” said Mdunyelwa.
Sundowns have also strengthened their squad in recent weeks, with the arrival of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele adding further quality to an already competitive midfield. Siyanda Ndlovu has also impressed with his recent performances as he continues to establish himself within the Masandawana squad.
However, Mdunyelwa knows Sundowns will need to remain focused against a Chippa outfit desperate to claim their first three points of the season.
“Chippa is not an easy team to play against, especially when they play in Buffalo City at home.
“It is important for us to understand the threat that they will possess and try to limit them as much as we can.”
The fixture presents contrasting objectives for the two teams. Sundowns will be looking to extend their advantage at the top of the table and maintain their perfect record, while Chippa will see the visit of the African champions as an opportunity to finally get their campaign up and running.
For Mdunyelwa, the encounter also represents another opportunity to stake his claim in a star-studded Sundowns squad, where competition remains fierce.
The midfielder has stressed the importance of staying mentally strong, remaining patient and making the most of opportunities when they come his way.
“It is important to be mentally strong and to wait for your opportunity, listen to the coaches and understand what is expected of you,” he said.
“I’ve been trying my utmost best to understand what is expected from me and also push mentally and be strong and fight.”
