Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the next round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup after Nuno Santos scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Al Ahli at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
New signing Thabang Matuludi was handed his debut at right-back, while Santos and Aubrey Modiba returned to the starting XI following last weekend’s draw with Chippa United.
Sundowns dominated possession during a cautious opening, with Al Ahli content to absorb pressure and protect the area around their penalty box.
The hosts eventually found a breakthrough in the 17th minute when Santos rose to meet a Teboho Mokoena cross from a set-piece and headed Sundowns in front.
Their advantage lasted only two minutes. Ivan Toney broke down the left before delivering for Feras Al-Buraikan, whose effort deflected off Ronwen Williams and into the net.
Sundowns continued to control possession for much of the remainder of the first half, although Al Ahli became more adventurous after the interval. The Saudi side pushed the African champions back during the opening stages of the second half but could not create a clear opportunity.
Sundowns missed a golden chance to retake the lead after 66 minutes when Aubrey Modiba’s excellent free-kick picked out an unmarked Ndamane, who fired over from close range.
The breakthrough finally came with 12 minutes remaining. Santos produced another composed header, directing the ball into the far corner to complete his brace.
Al Ahli committed players forward in search of an equaliser, but Sundowns defended resolutely to protect their lead.
Miguel Cardoso’s side held on to secure a significant victory over the Asian champions and book their place in the next stage of the Intercontinental Cup.
