ex-Chiefs defender crowned in Romania

"It's the Nature of Football" - Ngezana Addresses Criticism

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana has continued to impress in Romania, earning the prestigious Defender of the Year award from sports publication Fanatik.

The 27-year-old has been a key player for Romanian champions FCSB since his departure from South Africa. His exceptional performances throughout the 2023/24 season helped the club secure their first league title in nine years and clinch the Super Cup.

Ngezana expressed his gratitude for the recognition and thanked those who have supported him throughout his career, including his family and FCSB chairman Gigi Becali.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity, it seems like my Christmas present came early,” Ngezana said.

“It’s very important before I leave the stage to mention the people who played a huge role in my career – first of all, I just want to say thank you God for the opportunity to stand before you and I thank my family for giving me an opportunity to come in Romania to come and express my talent.

“And to mention the chairman Mr Gigi Becali.”

FCSB’s impressive domestic campaign has earned them a spot in the Europa League, where Ngezana and his teammates are aiming to progress to the knockout stage.

On the international stage, Ngezana has been a vital member of the Bafana Bafana squad. He played a crucial role in South Africa’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and is expected to be part of the team that will represent the nation in Morocco.

As South Africa prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Ngezana is likely to be included in the squad.
