DStv PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW: WEDNESDAY FIXTURES

Mamelodi Sundowns are three points away from making history and lifting their seventh consecutive league title. They face the troubled Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday at FNB Stadium. Meanwhile the battle for the second spot continues to heat up with Stellenbosch FC currently enjoying a three points advantage over third-place Orlando Pirates. We look to see if Steve Barker’s side can hold on to the second place till the end.

Here is the preview for DStv Premiership Wednesday action:

Wednesday 1 May

 22/10 Cape Town City | Draw 22/10 | Orlando Pirates (15:00)

The Citizens face a daunting task of ending their winless run that has spanned to over ten matches at the expense of high-flying Orlando Pirates who have proven not to go down easily as of late. Their last win was against Cape Town Spurs on 31 December 2023, they have played six draws and experienced three losses in their last nine league matches. Eric Tinkler will need to go back to the drawing board and find a winning formula for his side.

The Soweto Giants on the other hand eased past Royal AM 4-0 and are fighting tooth and nail to finish in the second spot and qualify for the CAF Champions League. They will be looking to close the three-points gap between them and Stellenbosch FC who are currently occupying the second position. Patrick Maswanganyi, Relebohile Mofokeng and Tshegofatso Mabasa have been giving defenders nightmares and are expected to roll over City’s defence. Back Pirates to win.

19/20 Chippa United | Draw 9/4 | Swallows 28/10 (15:00)

The Chilli Boys will be looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat after they visited AmaZulu this past Saturday. They are a point away from entering the top eight and a win in this match will put them on equal points with SuperSport United who are currently seventh on the log with 35 points. Kwanele Kopo and Thabo September’s side is desperate for a win to be able to build momentum ahead of their semi-final clash against Orlando Pirates this coming Saturday at Nelson Mandela Stadium. Eva Nga has been the talisman as of late and is tipped to be on the score sheet in this match.

The Dube Birds showed character when they held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-2 draw but failed to build from that when they lost 2-1 to TS Galaxy this past Friday. Another loss would see them sinking more into the drop zone. My money is on Chippa United.

7/10 Stellenbosch FC | Draw 49/20 | Golden Arrows (17:30)

Stellenbosch FC are coming into this match on the back of a 5-0 demolition of Polokwane City. They will be looking to stay on the winning lane to be able to finish second and partake in the CAF Champions League for the first time. Iqraam Rayners who is in a good position for the Golden Boot award is expected to continue being the target man for The Maroons.

Arrows have failed to secure a win in their past four league matches having played three draws and lost once. It is hard to see them securing all three points in this clash given their recent lacklustre performances and compared to Stellies form. Easy win for Stellies.

49/20 Royal AM | Draw 21/10 | SuperSport United 1/1 (19:30)

Following a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Orlando Pirates, Royal AM will be out for redemption at the expense of the troubled Pretoria side who have suffered a dip in form. The home side finds themselves too close to the danger zone and another loss would put them at risk of being overtaken by Moroka Swallows and Richards Bay.

The struggle continued for Gavin Hunt’s side when they were edged by Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 on Saturday. They have lost three of their past five games and the other two ended in stalemates. They can still turn things around and finish in the top five. A draw will be the outcome of this clash.
