Carling Knockout Cup preview: Magesi ready for Richards Bay

Magesi travel to Richards Bay on Saturday dreaming of a place in the final of the Carling Knockout Cup.

The newly-promoted Betway Premiership side shocked Orlando Pirates with a first round 3-2 win before seeing off last season’s losing finalists TS Galaxy 1-0 in the quarter-finals last time out.

They head into this tie unbeaten in their past six games in all competitions.

Richards Bay, meanwhile, beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 and Cape Town City 5-4 on penalties to secure their semi-final spot, but were last in action away to Orlando Pirates, where they lost 1-0.

The Natal Rich made it to this stage of knockout cup last season but went out to eventual winners Stellenbosch.

While the home side must do without suspended Langelihle Mhlongo for this tie, Gift Motupa is an injury doubt for Magesi.

Bay boss Brandon Truter said on SuperSport: “I think we lack quality and maturity in our last game, our final decisions were baffling at times for me.

“We have to work these things out at training, and the last couple of weeks, we didn’t have time [to train]. I think we had Sekhukhune United, Stellenbosch FC, Cape Town City FC, and now we had Orlando.

“On the weekend, we have another game in the semi-final.”

Magesi boss Clinton Larsen said on FARPost: ““If you are in a cup competition, it’s all about dreaming.

“As I said, when I was at Celtic, nobody gave us a chance to beat [Orlando] Pirates in the quarter-finals, beat Free State Stars in the semi-finals, and beat Sundowns in the final back in 2012.

“I am in a similar position where nobody gives us a chance from day one with Pirates. Let’s be honest, even you guys [the media], nobody gave us a chance.

“So we are where we are now, and I am happy for the club. All we are going to keep doing is go to every game and give an honest performance. We are a team that makes a lot of mistakes; we are not the best team in the league, and we know that.

“But we are going to fight tooth and nail in every game that we play, and sometimes that’s enough to win football matches.”
