The opening round of the Carling Knockout served up a mix of expected victories and shocking upsets.
Stellenbosch, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Richards Bay, Magesi, Cape Town City, TS Galaxy, and Marumo Gallants punched their tickets to the quarterfinals.
Defending champions Stellenbosch kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over AmaZulu in Durban. Goals from Devin Titus and Andre De Jong proved decisive, despite Tshepang Moremi’s effort for AmaZulu.
Saturday’s action brought more surprises, with Orlando Pirates suffering a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Magesi FC. Delano Abrahams, Thabiso Sesane (own goal), and Edmore Chirambandare gave Magesi a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. While Kabelo Dlamini and Evidence Makgopa pulled goals back for Pirates, it wasn’t enough to prevent a historic upset.
Elsewhere, Marumo Gallants secured their place in the quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over Polokwane City.
Mamelodi Sundowns dominated Lamontville Golden Arrows, winning 5-0 thanks to goals from Thapelo Morena, Iqraam Rayners, Mothobi Mvala, Peter Shalulile, and Kutlwano Letlhaku.
Kaizer Chiefs also cruised to a 4-0 win over SuperSport United, with Gaston Sirino, Yusuf Maart, Ranga Chivaviro, and Ashley Du Preez finding the net.
On Sunday, TS Galaxy edged past Chippa United 1-0 in extra time, with Dzenan Zajmovic scoring the decisive goal. Richards Bay completed the quarterfinal lineup with a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United, courtesy of a Sipho Mbule own goal.
