Cape Town City has appointed Muhsin Ertugral as its new Technical Director, bringing extensive local and international football experience to the club. Ertugral most recently served as Technical Advisor for the Turkish national team for the past four years.
This appointment comes after the departure of Eric Tinkler, who was released from his head coach duties following three seasons. Despite consistently achieving top-four finishes (second, fourth, and fifth place), a recent string of five league losses and proximity to the relegation zone prompted the change.
Ertugral is no stranger to South African football, having previously coached Kaizer Chiefs, Santos, Ajax Cape Town, Golden Arrows, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Maritzburg United, and Orlando Pirates. Ironically, he was initially slated to be City’s first coach in 2016 after John Comitis acquired the Black Aces franchise. However, Ertugral joined Pirates at that time, and Tinkler, who had just left Pirates, took the helm at City. Now, nine years later, Ertugral finally joins City, succeeding Tinkler in a full-circle moment.
The 65-year-old Turkish coach is known for developing young talent, a quality that aligns well with City’s current squad. Ertugral will serve as head coach until the end of the current season, working alongside first-team coaches Diogo Peral and Lebogang Manyama.
