Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named his preliminary squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. South Africa will face Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan in Group K, with their campaign kicking off against Uganda on September 6th.
The team is riding high on an eight-match unbeaten streak, their last defeat coming on penalties against Nigeria at the 2023 AFCON. Their most recent loss after 90 minutes was a 2-0 defeat to Mali in January 2024.
Broos has included fresh faces in his squad, with Vitesse FC’s Simon van Duivenbooden and Orlando Pirates’ Thalente Mbatha earning call-ups. Burnley striker Lyle Foster also returns to the fold.
Broos has excluded Bucs duo Tshegofatso Mabasa and Deano van Rooyen from the preliminary squad. Mabasa netted 16 league goals last season and won the Golden Boot Award whilst Deano van Rooyen captained Stellenbosch FC to the Carling Cup and was nominated for the PSL Defender of the Season.
