Danny Jordaan, the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), has been arrested and charged with fraud for allegedly misusing R1.3 million of the organization’s funds for personal gain.
According to news24.com, he’s accused of hiring a private security company and a public relations firm without the board’s approval, violating SAFA statutes and causing financial loss to the organization. As per the SowetanLive, Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale said ,
The allegations are that between 2014 and 2018, the president of SAFA used the organization’s resources for his personal gain including hiring a private security company for his personal protection, a Public Relations company without authorisation from the SAFA Board.”
Jordaan, along with SAFA’s chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, are scheduled to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge. The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, had issued arrest warrants, with Jordaan arrested and processed today.
This development follows a raid by the Hawks on SAFA’s offices in Nasrec, Johannesburg, in March, where they seized several items, including a laptop, external hard drives, a USB, and documents.
