Rarely has a season been this tight at the top of the table. As the table stands, Sundowns are in first position with 68 points from 30 matches played and with a goal difference of +36.
Sundowns played their last league fixture of the season on Tuesday evening in which they lost 3-2 to TS Galaxy. Had they won, Pirates would have needed to win both of their remaining fixtures. Now, the Buccaneers only need one win from their final two matches – against Durban City and Orbit College.
Two draws won’t suffice as the gap is three points. Goal difference is irrelevant as Pirates are way ahead in that department.

Sundowns will be kicking themselves as a win against Galaxy would have put a lot more pressure on Pirates, who would then have had to win both their remaining fixtures,
However, their task is less stressful now as the Soweto giants look for a first league title since 2011/2012. It would represent a seismic shift in the upper echelons of SA football as it would break an eight-year stranglehold on the domestic crown from Sundowns.
