Betway Premiership: Cape Town City and Gallants earn first wins, AmaZulu bottom

Cape Town City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over SuperSport United on a wet evening at Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

The win marked an important bounce-back for Cape Town City, who were eager to recover from a 3-0 defeat to Stellenbosch just three days earlier.

Prins Tjiueza netted the game’s only goal in the 34th minute, capitalizing on a defense-splitting pass from Haashim Domingo to slot the ball past Ricardo Goss.

Earlier in the match, Jaedin Rhodes had tested Goss with a long-range effort in the eighth minute, and Tjiueza missed a golden chance to open the scoring just five minutes later.

Rhodes came close again with a shot that narrowly missed the target just before the half-hour mark.

In the second half, Cape Town dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances to extend their lead.

SuperSport United nearly equalized three minutes from time when Lyle Lakay’s powerful shot forced a brilliant save from Darren Keet.

Despite their late efforts, SuperSport left Athlone Stadium empty-handed.

Gallants claim win to push AmaZulu to the bottom of the table

Marumo Gallants secured a narrow 1-0 victory over AmaZulu FC in their Betway Premiership clash at the Free State Stadium.

Daniel Msendami’s early goal, his first for Gallants, came in the third minute and proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The victory moved Gallants up to 14th place with three points, while AmaZulu languished at the bottom of the table after suffering their third consecutive defeat.

Gallants dominated early proceedings, with Msendami capitalizing on an opportunity to beat AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela.

Despite their lead, Gallants missed a chance to double their advantage when Sekela Sithole’s header was saved by Mzimela in the 38th minute.

AmaZulu, determined to avoid another defeat, brought on Boniface Haba at half-time to add more attacking firepower.

Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro posed a constant threat with his movement and physicality, but AmaZulu’s best chances came through Tshepang Moremi, who hit the crossbar in the 57th minute and missed another chance just after the hour mark.

As the clock ticked down, substitute Sede Dion had a late opportunity to equalize, but his shot went wide in the 86th minute. Gallants held firm to claim their first win of the season.

Sekhuhkune secure second league win of the season

Sekhukhune United remain unbeaten in this season’s Betway Premiership after recording a 2-0 victory against Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The hosts took the lead as early as the third minute Tresor Tshibwabwa turned in Keletso Makgalwa’s well-taken free-kick.

Sekhukhune looked dangerous from set-pieces and Tshibwabwa again went close but could not get his header on target at the second attempt.

The home side doubled their lead just four minutes after the halftime interval when Thabang Monare provided the assist for Mcedi Vandala to score.

It was the second consecutive loss for Arrows who had started their campaign with two wins from two with their next match ow coming after the international break against Chippa United.

Sekhukhune has now picked up maximum points in two of their three league encounters and travel to Royal AM on 26 October.

Royal AM remain winless after stalemate against Magesi

Royal AM remains winless in this season’s Betway Premiership campaign after being to a goalless draw by newly promoted Magesi on Saturday.

It is a fourth consecutive stalemate for the KZN outfit as they once again could not find their scoring boots.

Magesi would be content with a point as they backed up their maiden top-flight victory against Golden Arrows in midweek.

Clinton Larsen’s charges have now picked up four points in four matches as they look to climb the table and edge away from the relegation zone.

Magesi now wait until after the international break for their next game when they travel to Cape Town City on 27 October.

Royal AM will look to pick up their first league win of the season when they host Sekhukhune United next month.
