Former Manchester United striker coach Benni McCarthy believes that Marcus Rashford requires a more direct approach to regain his top form.
McCarthy, who worked closely with Rashford during his time at United, praised the player’s development but expressed concern over his recent inconsistency.
McCarthy spent two years in Manchester, during which time Rashford finished the 2022/23 campaign with 30 goals in all competitions. The attacker has been struggling for consistency this term after ending last season with just eight goals.
McCarthy suggests that a dose of tough love could help Rashford rediscover his best form. Speaking to SuperSport, McCarthy explained that during his time with Man Utd, he tried to be honest in his work with Rashford.
He said: “Obviously Rashy is special, a special player and a special human being. He’s Man United through and through.
With me, with me it wasn’t ‘oh Rashy’ it was ‘Marcus’ with me. I was straight to the point and he respected that.
“Instead of sweet-talking him because I need him to score so the team wins for other reasons.
McCarthy, who remains unattached following his United exit, added: “I was a straight shooter, and I don’t think he has enough people in his life who are straight with him because everyone tells him what he needs to hear and what he wants to hear, but I was normal and I think he appreciated that.”
