Belgium-based winger Shandre Campbell reflects on his move to Club Brugge

The 19-year-old, who was named Player of the Tournament at the u20 COSAFA Cup, has been making waves in Belgium.

While currently playing for Brugge’s youth team, he was granted permission to join the South African national team, Amajita, at the recent tournament in Mozambique.

In an interview with Metro FM on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, Campbell discussed the transformative impact of his move to Europe. He emphasized that while progress might take time, he’s confident in his ability to reach the highest level of the game.

“I do see an improvement, I see myself developing in a way that only I’ll understand but the fans will also see it but it’s gonna take time. Eventually, I’ll get there and I’ll be at the best level that I can be for a consistent amount of years,” Campbell said.

“First of all, it was the diet and then also they check your weaknesses in your body and they work on it every day in the gym and if it needs medical attention which improves you a lot because when you get on the pitch that strengthened part is now a big asset into when you wanna do something on the pitch, so definitely.”

Comparisons have been drawn between Campbell and Orlando Pirates’ young sensation, Relebohile Mofokeng. However, Campbell insists that there’s no need to rush his development.

“You know I always say God’s timing over mine, so, if I have to go through 120 firsts to get to the first team of Bafana Bafana, I will do it with a smile on my face and I really don’t care what other people say as in like ‘Yeah, he’s not ready yet’ whatever, it’s okay,” he added.

“I know my way through football and the route I had to take to get to Bafana Bafana. Rele is a good player and he deserves to be in Bafana Bafana. So, nothing against him, I love him, he’s my dawg and my path is different and we will play together sooner or later. Definitely, I will make the team.”
