Bafana Bafana's AFCON Qualifier Threats: THREE Ugandan players to watch

When Uganda faces South Africa in Friday’s sold out AFCON qualifier at Kampala’s Mandela National Stadium, head coach Paul Put is expected to rely on his top performers.

With both teams needing at least two points from their remaining two Group K qualifiers to secure a spot at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, here are three Ugandan players poised to make an impact:

Denis Omedi

The Kitara FC forward has been in fine form during Uganda’s AFCON qualifying campaign. The twenty-eight year old has proven to be a clinical finisher, with 2 goals to his name from 6 shots on target attempted during the AFCON qualifiers. Indeed, one of those goals came against Bafana Bafana on opening day and he will be looking to extend his streak against Hugo Broos’ men.

Allan Okello

Okello has been in fine form in the Uganda Premier League for second place Vipers FC. Across his previous three topflight appearances, the twenty-four year old has delivered five goals, with two of those coming from the penalty spot.

On the international front, the dangerman has turned provider and registered three assists from a total of eight chances created during the AFCON qualifiers, so keep an eye out for him!

Rogers Mato

The mercurial 21-year-old has been a constant threat down the wing. During his four AFCON qualifier appearances, he has a goal and an assist to his name. Bafana Bafana fans don’t need any reminding about his wonder strike against Veli Mothwa in the reverse fixture which saw the Cranes turn the tie in their favor!

Can Uganda’s talented trio help their team secure automatic qualification, or will Bafana Bafana, fresh from their impressive Afcon bronze medal finish, claim victory and top spot in Group K?
