South Africa’s U-20 national team is gearing up for the U-20 AFCON in Egypt, with coach Mdaka announcing a well-balanced 21-player squad.
Leading the charge are the exciting talents of Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Mfundo Vilakazi, players expected to play key roles in the team’s campaign. In addition, Mdaka has named four standby players – Gabriel Amato, Thato Sibiya, Naledi Hlongwane, and Thato Mpati – providing depth and cover for the tournament.
The full squad, including the standby list, will commence their final preparations with a training camp in Johannesburg starting on April 20th. This camp will be crucial for solidifying team cohesion and tactical strategies ahead of their departure for Egypt.
The inclusion of Mbokazi brings a significant boost to the squad. His recent stellar performances for Orlando Pirates in the PSL and the CAF Champions League have showcased his defensive prowess and maturity beyond his years. The 19-year-old defender made his senior debut in March during the Buccaneers’ 1–0 away win over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership. Since then, he has impressed with his composure, maturity, and defensive discipline, making a strong case for regular selection.
In his seven appearances, the Buccaneers have recorded five victories, including impressive wins against Mamelodi Sundowns and MC Alger. His consistent high-level performances have also earned him three coveted man-of-the-match awards, highlighting his immediate impact.
Coach Mdaka’s selection also includes familiar faces who have been part of the team’s journey, alongside exciting additions. Mamelodi Sundowns’ promising left-back, Asekho Tiwane, and Stellenbosch FC’s creative midfielder, Langelihle Phili, are among the notable players who will add quality and experience to the squad.
Explaining his squad selection, Coach Mdaka stated, “The list consists of the core of the team, the players we have had since the start of our preparations and through to COSAFA. We also have players we did not have in Mozambique, the likes of Mfundo Vilakazi, Asekho Tiwane, Langelihle Phili, and Siviwe Nkwali. This list is minus Shandre Campbell, whose team (Club Brugge in Belgium) has cited issues of him being in the first team and also issues of their championship,”.
The U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted biennially, serves as the continent’s premier youth football competition. This year’s edition will take place in Egypt from April 27th to May 18th, with Senegal aiming to defend their title.
The stakes are high, as the four teams that reach the semi-finals will earn the prestigious opportunity to represent Africa at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, scheduled for September 2025.
